Last week we had the pleasure of attending our first Adobe 99u Conference and we had a blast, both as attendees and teaching our workshop on Creative Collaboration. Although the 90-minute workshop flew by, we were blown away by the creativity and quick thinking exhibited by all the participants. You can see a few of the completed projects below along with a few other shots from our week in NYC. Thanks to everyone at Adobe for hosting us and to all the amazing participants in our workshop. Hope to see you next year!
Of all the Almanac Beer Co. projects we’ve had the pleasure of taking on, perhaps the most exciting has been getting to create a large-scale mural for their new brewery in Alameda, CA. Almanac’s founders asked us to create an isometric scene (similar to our previous can illustrations) that was evocative of a map of the bay area, bridging their two homes of San Francisco and Alameda, while also infusing the design with lots of little easter eggs, paying tribute to some of their favorite pop culture icons. See if you can spot them all including Ren & Stimpy, Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Rick & Morty, Monty Python, and Firefly.
The mural itself is a 40’ x 17’ behemoth, installed by the great team at Sterling Graphics in San Francisco. After considering both hand-painted and decal applications, the shear size and detail of the artwork led to the wallpaper style decal approach as the best option. You can see a video of the installation process below, along with our initial sketch and photo of the finished artwork, but we highly recommend stopping by the brewery to enjoy the mural in-person, paired with a cold pint.

Almanac’s latest release, Side Hustle Hazy IPA, continues our experimentation with metallized printing stock, giving this label a wraparound 70s era golden shimmer. Side Hustle is also the first of Almanac’s rotating hops series, so we also had fun creating a new icon for the labels - a call to check the bottom of the can for the seasonal selection of hops in the current batch. Check out a few photos fresh from the canning line below.
The Decemberists are back on the road with their Your Girl/Your Ghost World Tour 2018 and we were excited to take on tour poster duties for the first U.S. leg of the tour. We were inspired by girly/ghostly imagery coupled with the surreal look of their most recent album and music videos. In addition to the main tour poster, we also created a color variant version for the tour’s VIP attendees.
Each poster is an 18” x 24” four color screen print on Cougar Natural 100lb cover stock, with signed and numbered editions of 900 for the tour poster and 2,050 for the VIP poster. Check out our initial concept sketch below along with close-up photos of the finished prints, as well as a video documenting our process of designing the poster. The Decemberists tour poster is now available in the DKNG Store.

We’re thrilled to have joined forces with Under Armour to help promote their You Vs. The Year challenge, taking place all 2018-long through their Map My Run platform. We crunched the data of more than 150,000 participants over the course of the first quarter of the year, and uncovered some mind boggling stats including the fact that the group covered over 23 million kilometers, enough to circle the earth 584 times! You can also check out Under Armour’s coverage over on the Map My Run Blog.
In addition to their barrel aged beers, Almanac continues to churn out delicious hazy IPAs including their latest, Unfiltered Opinion. Taking a cue from the Mosaic variety of hops in the brew, we approached the label with our take on a modern mosaic pattern. Unfiltered Opinion joins the ranks of our previous Almanac IPA releases - New Taproom Smell IPA and Don’t Call It Frisco Double IPA.
For Almanac’s latest release, Craft Pilsner, a staple of their year-round lineup of beers, we wanted to create a classic design paying homage to the topography of the Bay Area. In addition to the cartographic pattern, we also experimented with printing on a metallized label to achieve the copper accents on the can. Look for Craft Pilsner sailing to stores now and more metallic everything on future Almanac packaging.
We're excited to join this year's Adobe 99u Conference in New York City, to lead a workshop on creative collaboration and how we work together as a team. Registration for the conference is now open and our workshop takes place on Friday, May 11, at Lincoln Center in NYC. Visit the 99u conference website to learn more. See you there!
When Adobe launched Illustrator CC with its new ability to zoom in to your composition further than ever before, they commissioned us to create a hyper detailed illustration to demonstrate the new feature. That illustration of an astronaut inside his futuristic cockpit continues to make appearances in various Adobe tutorials including the current Illustrator launch screen.
