2022 US Open Theme Art

This year we had the amazing opportunity to create the 2022 theme art for one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world - the US Open. Each year the US Open works with an artist to develop that year’s theme art, and there have been some amazing artists to participate including the likes of Peter Max. The project began with presenting ideas to the US Open team, focusing on concepts that emphasized the location of the tournament in New York City, and the electric excitement that attendees experience. 2022 also celebrated the 25th anniversary of Arthur Ashe Stadium, so we also wanted to pay tribute by featuring the iconic stadium center stage.

The design needed to be iconic, and a quick read as you were viewing it on the wall of a subway station, or on a t-shirt. We decided on a bold, minimalist take on the New York skyline coming together with Arthur Ashe Stadium, and line work representing the buzzing neon lights of New York City at night. With four different color palettes, the artwork was used on a variety of marketing materials, physical installations, and merchandise available at the tournament.

And as a final icing on the cake, our own Dan Kuhlken got to attend the US Open in person, getting a look at our work in the flesh, and the stellar work the US Open marketing team put together, from the court-side animated theme art, to the stairs and 3D installations. Thanks again to the team at the USTA for entrusting us with the 2022 theme art, and check out all the great coverage of the various applications of the art below.
