When Adobe launched Illustrator CC with its new ability to zoom in to your composition further than ever before, they commissioned us to create a hyper detailed illustration to demonstrate the new feature. That illustration of an astronaut inside his futuristic cockpit continues to make appearances in various Adobe tutorials including the current Illustrator launch screen. We’re excited to share our latest collaboration with Almanac Beer Co. on their new Tropical Galaxy beer, a Galaxy dry hopped sour farmhouse ale aged in oak barrels with mango, lime, and coconut. The name immediately conjured up imagery of 1960s sci-fi wrapped in a tropical vacation. We landed on a beach scene of an astronaut preparing to ride the waves of an alien planet, surrounded by the beer’s ingredients, along with some friendly alien wildlife.
Initial Concept Sketches
This project also gave us the opportunity to embrace the sci-fi cinema look by creating a limited edition poster to commemorate the beer’s release. The poster is an 18” x 24” 5 color screen print on rainbow metallic foil paper, giving the print a sparkling intergalactic appearance. The poster also made an appearance at the annual Screens ’n’ Suds charity event in Chicago with proceeds benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Mockingbird Foundation and Alzheimer's Association.
Tropical Galaxy is now available at the Almanac Taproom in San Francisco and available throughout the country wherever finer beers are sold.
"Tropical Galaxy is a cosmic elixir of lush equatorial flavors. We blended mangoes, lime and coconut together in oak foedres with our farmhouse-brett base beer to create a far out and funky tropical treat. We finished it with a generous dry-hopping of Australian Galaxy Hops, contributing aromas of passionfruit and citrus. Enjoy on your next intergalactic odyssey with fresh crab, jerk chicken or scallop ceviche."
Label Printing Process
We've created the following design mockups of the finished label on both white and black backgrounds for your sharing convenience.
The new Rocketeer series of art prints explores three different planets, each with its own atmosphere, spacecraft, and solar system. Each print is a 16” x 20” four-color screen print on French Construction 100 lb cover stock. Included in the series are Europa on Nightshift Blue paper, Orion on Paver Red paper, and Aquarius on Timber Green paper.

Close Up Shots
We're pleased to be participating in "SYNTH: A Group Art Show Inspired by Bob Moog" for the third year in a row (check out our 2010 and 2011 Moog inspired blog posts too). For our submission this year, we decided to fuse Moog's iconic synthesizers with the cockpit of a spaceship to create an intergalactic music machine. The show takes place at Moogfest in Asheville, North Carolina this weekend October 26-28. All proceeds from the sales at the festival benefit the Bob Moog Foundation which provides hands-on opportunities for children to learn about the science of sound and music. Our print is a 24" x 18" five-color screen print with the fifth color being a glow-in-the-dark overlay. Rollover the image below and check out the close up shots below to see what is revealed when the glow layer becomes visible. You can also see our initial brainstorming sketch below. A black light is highly recommended for full enjoyment of this print which goes on sale Monday in our online store.
