Our latest project for Almanac Beer Co. launches us into uncharted galaxies with their new Sournova series of canned sour beers. Kicking off the series is Blueberry Sournova. These are barrel aged sours made with real fruit which any beer connoisseur will recognize as worlds apart from typical offerings, so we wanted to create something special with the labels by giving them out of this world metallic gradients and sparkles. Check out a few photos of the cans below courtesy of Almanac. Our friends at Down the Street Designs also collaborated on the project to create an awesome outer space animation of the can in action, which you can also check out below.
When Adobe launched Illustrator CC with its new ability to zoom in to your composition further than ever before, they commissioned us to create a hyper detailed illustration to demonstrate the new feature. That illustration of an astronaut inside his futuristic cockpit continues to make appearances in various Adobe tutorials including the current Illustrator launch screen. Initial Concept Sketch
The much anticipated fruit forward brother of Almanac’s Tropical Galaxy is here, and we were honored to put a peachy spin on the packaging! Peach Galaxy is a dry-hopped sour farmhouse ale aged in oak barrels with peaches and spices. The Almanac galaxy series of beers inspired us to pursue a 1960s sci-fi style of illustration, and this new twist on the label includes plenty of new peach inspired touches as well as a new peach color scheme. You can check out our original Tropical Galaxy label here.
“Peach Galaxy is an intergalactic flavor odyssey! This stellar brew started with a blend of farmhouse Brettanomyces ales fermented with our house sour culture and aged in oak barrels. Next, 6,000 lbs of organic yellow peaches from Blossom Bluff Orchards in Northern California were added to the barrels to mature for several months. The beer was finished with a touch of coriander and a heavy cosmic dry-hop of Galaxy and Citra. The finished beer has an IPA-style aroma, backed by tart peach skin flavors and hints of gummy rings. Pair this out-of-this-world elixir with grilled ribs, ceviche, and peach coffee cake.”
We’re excited to share our latest collaboration with Almanac Beer Co. on their new Tropical Galaxy beer, a Galaxy dry hopped sour farmhouse ale aged in oak barrels with mango, lime, and coconut. The name immediately conjured up imagery of 1960s sci-fi wrapped in a tropical vacation. We landed on a beach scene of an astronaut preparing to ride the waves of an alien planet, surrounded by the beer’s ingredients, along with some friendly alien wildlife.

This project also gave us the opportunity to embrace the sci-fi cinema look by creating a limited edition poster to commemorate the beer’s release. The poster is an 18” x 24” 5 color screen print on rainbow metallic foil paper, giving the print a sparkling intergalactic appearance. The poster also made an appearance at the annual Screens ’n’ Suds charity event in Chicago with proceeds benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Mockingbird Foundation and Alzheimer's Association.
Tropical Galaxy is now available at the Almanac Taproom in San Francisco and available throughout the country wherever finer beers are sold.
"Tropical Galaxy is a cosmic elixir of lush equatorial flavors. We blended mangoes, lime and coconut together in oak foedres with our farmhouse-brett base beer to create a far out and funky tropical treat. We finished it with a generous dry-hopping of Australian Galaxy Hops, contributing aromas of passionfruit and citrus. Enjoy on your next intergalactic odyssey with fresh crab, jerk chicken or scallop ceviche."
Label Printing Process
We've created the following design mockups of the finished label on both white and black backgrounds for your sharing convenience.
The new Rocketeer series of art prints explores three different planets, each with its own atmosphere, spacecraft, and solar system. Each print is a 16” x 20” four-color screen print on French Construction 100 lb cover stock. Included in the series are Europa on Nightshift Blue paper, Orion on Paver Red paper, and Aquarius on Timber Green paper.
