Our New Skillshare Class: Illustrating An Icon Set

We're excited to share our latest Skillshare.com class which is now live! In this class you'll learn to design a cohesive icon series, inspired by your favorite movies. The idea behind the class was sparked by our poster celebrating Paramount Pictures’ 100th Anniversary, in which we designed 100 unique icons representing a movie from each year of the studio's history.

From sketching and concept development to final execution, we'll share how to distill complex subject matter into recognizable small-scale designs. You’ll learn how to:

  • Use reference imagery to simplify a complex subject into a single image
  • Create a limited color palette that works across a series
  • Establish design rules to ensure consistency across your image set

From small-scale projects like buttons and pins to professional branding work where consistency is key, students will leave this class with an arsenal of design tools to utilize again and again. This class joins more than 10,000 classes on Skillshare, an online learning community where anyone can discover, enroll, or even teach a class in design, entrepreneurship, and more.

Star Wars + DKNG

This year we had the amazing opportunity to work on two projects for the much anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens. A Force for Change is the charitable arm of the Star Wars franchise and along with director J.J. Abrams, A Force for Change partnered with Gallery 1988 in L.A. to create Art Awakens, a campaign in which new art pieces based on the Star Wars universe were sold with proceeds benefiting UNICEF. The campaign launched at Disney’s D23 convention in Anaheim earlier this year where our first print premiered - a 20” x 20” metal print with a limited edition of 150 that were exclusively available at D23 and through the gallery.

The second piece we created is an 18” x 24" five-color screen print that recently premiered at Gallery 1988 along with six other printed editions as well as dozens of original pieces by a range of talented artists. “Resistance X-Wing” depicts the brand new X-Wing fighter from the new film, flying just above the surface of the ocean with outer space reflected in the water. “Resistance X-Wing” was exclusively available at Gallery 1988 but you can check out close up photos of both prints below as well as our initial sketches and photos from both D23 and the Art Awakens gallery show opening.

Wizard of Oz Mondo Posters

We’re excited to announce the release of our Wizard of Oz posters in three versions. The prints feature Dorothy's carriage drawn by The Horse of a Different Color as she enters the Emerald City. You can check out the scene from the film below. When approaching a film as iconic as The Wizard of Oz, we wanted to find a unique focal point beyond the main iconography of the film. The Horse of a Different Color occupies just a brief scene, but proved to be a great subject for a print series that includes the three different colors - purple, red, and yellow - that the horse takes on in the film.

The poster is a four color screen print on French Speckletone Starch Mint paper with a super limited artist edition of 20 of each color. Each print shares three ink colors with the fourth screen customized to provide the color change for each of the three horses. Check out our initial sketch below as well as close up photos of the finished prints. The Wizard of Oz posters are now available in the DKNG Store.

The Pink Panther 50th Anniversary Movie Poster

The Pink Panther 50th Anniversary Movie Poster by DKNG

We’re thrilled to have collaborated with Skuzzles and MGM for the first time on a limited edition Pink Panther poster to celebrate the film’s 50th Anniversary. Although the Pink Panther in the film refers to a stolen precious diamond, the animated character first appeared in the film’s main title sequence and went on to star in its own Saturday morning cartoons. The poster depicts the panther sneaking up on an unsuspecting Inspector Clouseau.

The Pink Panther is an 18” x 24” screen print available as a regular edition, four-color print on French Pop-Tone Cotton Candy paper and a variant edition, three-color print on Cougar White paper. Check out a few close up photos of the finished prints below as well as our original concept sketches. The Pink Panther goes on sale in the DKNG Store on January 26, at a random time.

TRON: The Original Classic Poster

We recently had the opportunity to collaborate with Galerie F and the Logan Theatre in Chicago to create a limited edition screen printed poster for the cult classic TRON. The iconic light cycles from the film immediately came to mind as the focal point for the design. The poster captures the moment that the player enters the grid and the light cycle materializes around them.

The poster is a three color screen print on Cougar White paper. Check out a few closeup photos of the finished print below as well as our original concept sketch and a process video. TRON will be released in the DKNG store on Monday, January 19, at a random time.

The Dark Knight Tumbler Poster

2014 marked the 75th Anniversary of Batman, and we were thrilled to create an official poster for Mondo and DC Comics to commemorate a more recent addition to the Batman universe: the Tumbler. Despite its military appearance, the new incarnation of the Batmobile actually has its roots in the 1950s television version of the Batmobile, according to Christopher Nolan and production designer Nathan Crowley. The two vehicles share similar features including tail fins and a rear jet engine. The Tumbler in the print is at home in the Dark Knight’s ultra-modern Batcave.

The Tumbler is a 24” x 18” two color screen print on French Speckletone Madero Beach paper and is available in a super limited artist edition of 50 posters. Check out a few closeup images of the finished print below as well as our initial concept sketch. The Tumbler will be available in the DKNG store on Monday, January 12, 2015 at a random time.

Home Alone Mondo Poster

We’re excited to announce a new movie poster for one of our favorite childhood movie’s, Home Alone. When approaching a concept for Home Alone, we knew the interior of the McCallister home and all of Kevin’s tricks to foil the Wet Bandits were likely to be the focus of our design. However, we also wanted to incorporate the exterior of the house and provide a different perspective on some of the movie’s most iconic scenes. We took some liberties with the architecture of the house and the layout of the property, but in the end the exterior allowed us to include some of our favorite imagery from Home Alone including the Oh-Kay Plumbing van, the perpetually knocked over bronze statue, and of course, Old Man Marley.

This poster was an interesting challenge for us as we’ve typically been using two-color printing for this more realistic style. This time around, we stepped up to a four-color design that looks great with the fine halftones we’re using. The poster is printed on a subtle metallic paper that will give the snow an extra shimmer. Check out a few closeup images of the poster below as well as a process video and our original sketch. Home Alone will be available in the DKNG store Monday, January 5, 2014 at a random time.

The Iron Giant Mondo Art Print

Last month our Iron Giant poster premiered at the first ever MondoCon in Austin, Texas. We now have our own copies of the print available for sale in the DKNG Store. The poster features one of our favorite scenes in the movie when the giant first discovers that he can fly, taking Hogarth along for the ride as his mother looks on. The poster is an 18” x 24” three color screen print with metallic ink on Cougar White paper. Check out a few closeup images of the print below as well as our original sketch.

Bill & Ted Double Feature

This Summer, the Alamo Drafthouse hosted a double-feature of the cult classics Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. We created a poster for each movie which are now available in our store.

The Excellent Adventure poster is a 24” x 36” five color screen print with a numbered artist edition of 50. We were inspired by the time traveling phone booth from the film and each year visited by Ted “Theodore” Logan and Bill S. Preston, Esquire.

The Bogus Journey poster is also a 24” x 36” five color screen print with a numbered artist edition of 50. This poster depicts the levels of heaven, hell, and purgatory that Bill & Ted visit throughout their trip.

Check out closeup photos of the prints below as well as our initial sketches. Both posters are now available in the DKNG store including a special deal when purchasing both posters.
