Flatstock 27 @ Bumbershoot

This coming weekend DKNG will be exhibiting at FLATSTOCK 27 in Seattle WA at the Bumbershoot Music Festival. The FLATSTOCK poster show series is presented by the American Poster Institute (API). It is an ongoing series of exhibitions featuring the work of many of the most popular concert poster artists working today.

The API is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to serving poster artists and promoting the art form. Both the API and its FLATSTOCK series were organized in 2002 as a result of conversations between interested artists and supporters frequenting the popular web site GigPosters.com. The best concert posters have always captured both the essence of the music they promoted and the spirit of the time in which they were produced. This is as true today as it was in San Francisco during the Sixties.

The FLATSTOCK shows provide the general public with an ongoing series of opportunities to see fine poster art in person and to meet the artists who’ve created it — they provide the API with a way to present the poster artists collectively while showcasing the breadth of individual styles they represent.

This past friday I celebrated my birthday by inviting my local friends to a BBQ at our home office. I was so excited to see how creative and generous our guests were with the amount of food, drinks and gifts they brought. Although the theme of the party was never officially established as being “Mexican”, some of the many gifts included home made ceviche (thank you Jules), chips and beans (thank you Rosie), a huge Sponge Bob Piñata filled with candy, toys and mini tequilas, (wow, thank YOU Colin and Katie), and very large amount of Pacifico (you know who you are). But I would have to say one of the most creative additions to the mix was the Mariachi cupcakes made by my very talented friend Whitney. She recently wrote a pretty cool blog post on the creation of the cupcakes. Check it out here.

FRIDAY: OAKLAND, CA.

When we got into town on Friday, our first stop was at Oakland’s Forward Printing.  Forward has been printing our t-shirts for a couple years and we’re big fans of their waterbased printing.  On this trip, we were picking up a fresh batch of Lion tees and got to check out Forward’s setup from burning screen to mixing ink.  Thanks to the Dans and the rest of the crew at Forward for the warm welcome.  Here are a few shots from our visit:

SATURDAY/SUNDAY: SAN FRANCISCO, CA.

Saturday and Sunday were spent selling our wares at the Renegade Craft Fair San Francisco.  A lot of fellow poster artists were exhibiting as well and several friends stopped by to say hi.  With views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz just outside the fair, it was a fun location for DKNG’s third Renegade show.

MONDAY: EMERYVILLE, CA.

Bright and early Monday morning, we headed to Monolith Press in Emeryville to check out the shop and attend to the business of hand signing and numbering 1000 posters.  The poster, for Phish, was by far the biggest edition we’ve numbered thus far, but in four short hours, we had them all finished and ready for delivery to the show in Wisconsin the following week.  Thanks to Mauz and Ross for their stellar work on these prints and stay tuned for a more detailed blog post about the making of the Phish poster on Bang Back.

After the work was done, we had a couple days to kick back and visit friends on our way back home.  All in all, a fun and busy trip.  We look forward to being back in the Bay soon.

↳ Unwinding in Moss Landing, CA.

For the past month DKNG has been preparing their very first installation piece for a show at the A+D Museum in Los Angeles. “COME IN! A Spatial Intervention” is the brainchild of local Venice artist Ashkahn. The idea behind the show was to showcase some of LA’s finest up and coming artists by allowing them to use their trademark talents to fill a designated space in the museum. When we were presented with this challenge we decided to take what we know best, 2-dimensional art, and apply it in a 3-dimensional environment.

The idea was to create an entire cityscape, rolling hills and a sun and moon all on flat pieces of painted cardboard, and to hang these pieces in a way so that they were all on separate layers to create the illusion of 3D environment. DKNG primarily works within the Adobe programs Illustrator and Photoshop. The projects created in these programs use layers to keep certain sections separate from eachother for ease of editing. In conclusion, The actual installation piece created a life size environment for viewers to experience what it is like to be literally inside a DKNG project.

Once the artwork was recreated in the computer we had a better idea of the amount of cardboard needed for the project and the colors/supplies needed for the project.

Using the computer mockup we designated 6 4″x8″ sheets of cardboard to have specific cuts for each piece.

PAINTING/CUTTING/TAPING/PAINTING

Once the initial portions were cut we began the painting process, which was to make the background for each piece.

We made the round pieces (clouds and rolling hills) by using household items as stencils, such as plates and drum cymbals. Yes we play music.

The first round of painting deserved a XX break.

The next step was to cut the tops of each painted rectangular piece to create specific building shapes.

Once the pieces were cut, we began to mask off the areas for windows to be painted.

And Voila… the releasing of the masking tape.

INSTALLATION

Some of the largest pieces were 8″ long so in order to transfer them to the museum we had to endure a car ride with cardboard hanging over our heads.

So far so good.

Each piece was hung by fishing line from the top of the museum’s original track lighting. We added length to these tracks by zip tying long wooden dowels to each end.

I unfortunately never got any shots of the special function between the sun and moon, but if you can use your imagination, the they were hung with a pulley system against the wall so that when the sun was pulled down the moon would rise and vice versa. A young child at the show was enjoying this feature for about an hour, which was awesome to see in action.

As an extra treat we taped the photos and mockups to the back of the buildings to give the viewers a more “behind the scenes” experience.

The installation was already interactive since viewers would be able to walk in between each row of buildings and hills. But we thought it would be a much more inviting piece if we hung sharpies around the installation allowing people to draw on the cardboard to add their own touch to the art.

SHOWTIME

All in all the show was a great success. There was an overwhelming turnout and we received and equally overwhelming response for our work. Thank you to everyone that showed their love and support. Without it, we would not be where we are today.

For a couple months now our posters have been part of an exciting new project. An app called Rock Show, made for Apple’s new iPad, lets users browse, share and order hand-made, limited edition concert and music posters. And on August 3rd it was announced that Rock Show is now supported on the brand new iPhone 4. What makes this so exciting, besides the fact that the new iPhone is super sexy and popular, is that all the posters displayed in the app can now be viewed on the iPhone 4’s new Retina Display. I had a chance to check this out first hand, and I have to say it was a pretty beautiful presentation.

All concert posters featured in Rock Show are available to order directly through the application. Most poster orders are shipped by the artist that originally created them, which includes us.
