It’s that time of year again. DKNG will be exhibiting at events nearly every weekend in December. We’re excited about our new line of products which make both great gifts and stocking stuffers. We will be selling posters, art prints, shirts, stickers, buttons, magnets, postcards and our all new DKNG calendars.

We’ve held back a good amount of posters and art prints that are no longer available in our online store, which will be exclusively sold at these events. Some prints include, Phish (Hollywood, CA), The National (Columbia, MD), both the original Mammoth and Mammoth Variant, and 2011 Moog.

We will also be coming out with new King, Owl and Lion shirts, all with different color ways printed on new material.

Come In! 2 at A+D Museum

↳ Logo for A+D Museum's second annual Come in! exhibit.

We’re excited to be participating in A+D Museum’s second annual Come In! exhibition, showcasing installations from L.A.’s up and coming designers. We had a great time creating an installation for last year’s first ever Come In! spatial intervention, which you can check out here.

This year, in addition to creating an installation for the exhibit, we were honored that A+D also asked us to create the branding for Come In! 2. The logo we created for the event is above, and a few of the other marketing pieces we created are pictured below. The exhibit this year adds the theme of Los Angeles’ surf, skate, and bike culture with participants ranging from the Girl Skateboards Art Department to the LA Derby Dolls.

The museum will be open during the installation process starting on June 14, with a party culminating the artists’ creations on July 7. We’re also excited to announce that our very own printer, Danny Askar, will be on hand at the July 7 party for live screen printing. Yeeeha! Strap on ‘dem boots and join us at this year’s FLATSTOCK poster show in Austin, Texas for SXSW.

The FLATSTOCK poster shows are presented by the American Poster Institute (API). It is an ongoing series of exhibitions featuring the work of many of the most popular concert poster artists working today.

DKNG will be there with a double booth, double the staff, and of course double the fun! So if you are planning on being at SXSW this year, come and say hi. We’d love to see ya.

Flatstock 27 – Bumbershoot Music Festival – Seattle

This coming weekend DKNG will be exhibiting at FLATSTOCK 27 in Seattle WA at the Bumbershoot Music Festival. The FLATSTOCK poster show series is presented by the American Poster Institute (API). It is an ongoing series of exhibitions featuring the work of many of the most popular concert poster artists working today.

The API is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to serving poster artists and promoting the art form. Both the API and its FLATSTOCK series were organized in 2002 as a result of conversations between interested artists and supporters frequenting the popular web site GigPosters.com. The best concert posters have always captured both the essence of the music they promoted and the spirit of the time in which they were produced. This is as true today as it was in San Francisco during the Sixties.

The FLATSTOCK shows provide the general public with an ongoing series of opportunities to see fine poster art in person and to meet the artists who’ve created it — they provide the API with a way to present the poster artists collectively while showcasing the breadth of individual styles they represent.

COME IN! A Spatial Intervention

For the past month DKNG has been preparing their very first installation piece for a show at the A+D Museum in Los Angeles. “COME IN! A Spatial Intervention” is the brainchild of local Venice artist Ashkahn. The idea behind the show was to showcase some of LA’s finest up and coming artists by allowing them to use their trademark talents to fill a designated space in the museum. When we were presented with this challenge we decided to take what we know best, 2-dimensional art, and apply it in a 3-dimensional environment.

The idea was to create an entire cityscape, rolling hills and a sun and moon all on flat pieces of painted cardboard, and to hang these pieces in a way so that they were all on separate layers to create the illusion of 3D environment. DKNG primarily works within the Adobe programs Illustrator and Photoshop. The projects created in these programs use layers to keep certain sections separate from eachother for ease of editing. In conclusion, The actual installation piece created a life size environment for viewers to experience what it is like to be literally inside a DKNG project.

MOCKUPS

Once the artwork was recreated in the computer we had a better idea of the amount of cardboard needed for the project and the colors/supplies needed for the project.

Using the computer mockup we designated 6 4″x8″ sheets of cardboard to have specific cuts for each piece.

PAINTING/CUTTING/TAPING/PAINTING

Once the initial portions were cut we began the painting process, which was to make the background for each piece.

We made the round pieces (clouds and rolling hills) by using household items as stencils, such as plates and drum cymbals. Yes we play music.

The first round of painting deserved a XX break.

The next step was to cut the tops of each painted rectangular piece to create specific building shapes.

Once the pieces were cut, we began to mask off the areas for windows to be painted.

And Voila… the releasing of the masking tape.

INSTALLATION

Some of the largest pieces were 8″ long so in order to transfer them to the museum we had to endure a car ride with cardboard hanging over our heads.

So far so good.

Each piece was hung by fishing line from the top of the museum’s original track lighting. We added length to these tracks by zip tying long wooden dowels to each end.

I unfortunately never got any shots of the special function between the sun and moon, but if you can use your imagination, the they were hung with a pulley system against the wall so that when the sun was pulled down the moon would rise and vice versa. A young child at the show was enjoying this feature for about an hour, which was awesome to see in action.

As an extra treat we taped the photos and mockups to the back of the buildings to give the viewers a more “behind the scenes” experience.

The installation was already interactive since viewers would be able to walk in between each row of buildings and hills. But we thought it would be a much more inviting piece if we hung sharpies around the installation allowing people to draw on the cardboard to add their own touch to the art.

SHOWTIME

All in all the show was a great success. There was an overwhelming turnout and we received and equally overwhelming response for our work. Thank you to everyone that showed their love and support. Without it, we would not be where we are today.

8/11/10 – COME IN! Museum Exhibition at the A+D Museum

DKNG is proud to be an exhibiting artist at the upcoming COME IN! A Spatial Intervention at the Museum of Architecture + Design, Los Angeles (map). The museum will be open beginning July 14th where you can see the installations evolve until the exhibit culminates on August 11th. The completed installations will be on display until the end of August.
