Explosions In The Sky Poster and Art Print

It’s always been a dream of ours to create an Explosions In The Sky poster. So when we were asked to create one for their recent Minneapolis show, we knew we had to knock it out of the park. The idea behind the poster came from an interview in which the band was described as having a “Mammoth Sound”.
The poster is a 24″ x 18″ two color print screen print on 80 lb. French Speckletone “Sand”. We decided to also print an art print version (sans the text).
Below is an image of the art print, some close-up shots of the poster, as well as our original sketch of the design. We also created a process video showing the creation of the design from sketch to completion. A limited number of prints are available in our store.

how did you do these ‘paper print spots’ texture?
Dan says:
Almost all of the art is half toned. Some of the little spontaneous grains in the design are actually speckles from the paper itself.
Erin says:
One word: BRA-VO.
Thank you so, so much for sharing this. I just posted this on our Facebook page/tweeted to our followers.
My question: Did they love it??
Dan says:
EITS were very pleased. It’s always our end goal to make the client very happy. Luckily we enjoy doing it.
John Mata says:
This is killer and it inspires me to do more hand drawing. Great job!
Javier Garcia says:
This is truly a work of art from the sketching to the printed piece. Thanks for sharing all the process, made my day!

KILLED IT!!! Beautiful work guys
Andrew says:
incredible work dan!
Brian says:
The poster is magnificent. Any chance of them being reprinted?
Grant says:
Is it supposed to be a big island thats secretely a giant elephant with a boat approaching it or is it just an elephant swimming around with a boat far off into the background?
Dan says:
Brian – Hard to say. They sold very quickly and it’s a definite possibility that we re-print as a new color way.
Grant – It’s a Mammoth that is so large it creates land masses. Boat is approaching it.
John says:
I’d love to buy one of these if they were reprinted.
sea says:

Linda says:
Absolutely amazing video and artwork Dan!!! So proud of you. You will be famous any day now!!!!
Anthony says:
I’ve gotta ask.. is that typeface (for EITS at the top) a font or did you create it yourselves specifically for the poster? I suspect the latter but.. no harm in asking I think. :’)
Jason says:
really sad to see these sold out. would really like to pick one up.
David says:
Who is the genius in the video? I want to buy him/her a coffee.

Seriously, this is fantastic.
Amazing work.
Joshua says:
Wanted one at the show on Monday, hesitated to buy at the time because I was worried it would not survive the show. All gone the instant the band walked off. Please reprint and let me know! My son would adore, and I love it.
missy! says:
beautiful. thank you for the inspiration to keep kicking my ass in school
keep it!!!
CS says:
How long did the entire process take? Excellent job.
Daniel says:
Hi there, I love your style. What tool was that in illustrator that you used to get that diamond cut look?
Dan says:
Anthony: The type derives from a slightly altered existing font
Daniel: The vector shapes composing the “diamond cut look” is simply the pen tool. Each node links to each other using smart guides and I used no round edges. Everything is straight lines/polygons
Daniel says:
As I thought, such a simple method but an effective result! I hope you don’t mind but I just tweeted this page!
Dan says:
Tweet away!
Don Clark says:
Super cool.

This is probably my favorite poster from you guys so far. I’m sad I missed picking it up before it was gone. You’ve seriously outdone yourselves. Jaw dropper for sure. Great work.
John says:
At the risk of sounding whiny, please please reprint this. I think I speak for others when I say that it’s work like this that inspires future creativity. I’d love to have a framed version in my studio or son’s room. Well done on an amazing creation
Dan says:
We’re in the works of creating a variant edition. Follow our social networks and/or mailing list for when we release it online.

It may be more of a secret on your end, but any clue into the process for creating the different textures would also be appreciated. Always great to see the process involved behind the scenes.
Thanks for the introduction to some great music as well. I hadn’t heard of the band until I saw the poster, but just bought the album.
